What does compressing an Excel file mean?

Compressing an Excel file means making it take up less space without changing its content. Many workbooks are bigger than they need to be because of large images, leftover internal data or formatting applied to millions of empty cells.

The compressor recompresses the file as much as possible, cleans that leftover data and optimizes images. Old .xls files are converted to .xlsx, which is usually 50% to 90% smaller.

    Advantages

    • Three levels: Safe (lossless), Recommended and Maximum.
    • Keeps data, formulas and formatting.
    • Supports XLSX, XLSM, XLSB, XLS, ODS, CSV and TSV.
    • Several files at once, showing how much each one saved.
    • Files are deleted from the server as soon as you get the result.

How to compress an Excel file

    1. Drag your spreadsheets onto the tool or click to choose them.
    2. Choose the compression level: Safe, Recommended or Maximum.
    3. Wait a few seconds while each file is optimized.
    4. Check how much it shrank and download the compressed file.

    Ideas for using it

    • Email heavy spreadsheets without exceeding the attachment limit.
    • Upload files to tax, bank or university portals.
    • Save space in the cloud or on your disk.
    • Make slow workbooks open faster.
    • Modernize old .xls files.

    Tips for the best result

    • Start with the Recommended level; use Maximum if you need an even smaller file.
    • Workbooks with many photos are where you will see the biggest savings.
    • For very large CSV files, convert them to XLSX or pack them into a ZIP.
    • Keep a copy of the original until you have checked the result.

    Frequently asked questions

Is quality or data lost when compressing?

Nothing is lost at the Safe level. The Recommended and Maximum levels only reduce image quality; data and formulas do not change.

How much can a file be reduced?

It depends on the content. Workbooks with images or with formatting in empty cells can shrink a lot; .xls files converted to .xlsx are usually 50% to 90% smaller.

What happens to my files afterwards?

They are processed on this site's server, without external services, and deleted as soon as the result is sent.

Can I compress several files at once?

Yes, drag them all together and each one is compressed separately.

Does the compressed file open normally in Excel?

Yes. It is a normal Excel file; when you open it, Excel recalculates whatever it needs.
