Password Protect Excel Files Online

Add an opening password to your spreadsheets with AES-256 encryption. When the file is opened, Excel or LibreOffice will ask for the password.

Keep your password safe: if you forget it, nobody will be able to open the file, not even us.

AES-256 encryption, the same used by Excel and LibreOffice. The password is not stored and the file is deleted from the server as soon as the download finishes.

What does password protecting a spreadsheet mean?

Password protecting a file means encrypting all of its content so nobody can open it without the key. It is not the same as protecting a sheet against changes: here the whole file is unreadable without the password.

It uses the same encryption as Excel's "Encrypt with password" option (AES-256), so the file opens normally in Excel and LibreOffice once you type the password.

    Advantages

    • AES-256 encryption, the Office and OpenDocument standard.
    • Keeps formulas, formatting, charts and macros.
    • Supports XLSX, XLSM, XLSB, XLS, ODS, CSV and TSV.
    • Several files at once with the same password.
    • The password is never stored or logged.

How to add a password to an Excel file

    1. Type the password and repeat it to confirm it.
    2. Drag your spreadsheets onto the tool or click to choose them.
    3. For CSV, choose whether you want an encrypted XLSX or an encrypted ZIP.
    4. Click protect and download the protected file.
    5. Open it to check that it asks for the password.

    Ideas for using it

    • Send payrolls or employee data by email.
    • Share financial or customer information.
    • Store personal documents in the cloud.
    • Protect password lists or medical data.

    Tips for the best result

    • Use a long password with letters, numbers and symbols.
    • Keep it somewhere safe: if you forget it, nobody will be able to open the file.
    • Send the password through a different channel than the file.
    • .xls files are converted to .xlsx, because the old encryption is weak.

    Frequently asked questions

    How secure is the encryption?

It uses AES-256 with SHA-512, the same encryption Excel uses in "Encrypt with password".

    Is my password stored?

No. The password is never stored or logged, and the file is deleted as soon as the result is sent.

Can I recover the file if I forget the password?

No. Without the password there is no way to open it, not even for us.

Can a CSV file be protected?

The CSV format does not support passwords, so it is converted to an encrypted XLSX or saved inside a ZIP with AES-256 encryption.

Is anything lost from the file?

No. Formulas, formatting, charts and macros are kept.
